FAMILIES OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS.

We already know a lot about different musical instruments, but we need to learn the family they belong to, and that depends on the way we play them.
Let´s learn about the three families of musical instruments!

1.WIND INSTRUMENTS

To play instruments such as the flute, clarinet or trumpet we have to BLOW,
as they are in the WIND family. We can also divide the WIND instruments into two groups: WOODWIND and BRASS, according to what they are made of, and the way we blow them is not the same, as the mouthpieces are different.
FLUTE- WOODWIND

WOODWIND instruments were originally made of wood and you need to introduce the mouthpiece into your mouth with many of them.

TRUMPET-BRASS

BRASS instruments are made of this and are similar to the trumpet.

Here you have some videos in which you can see some of these instruments and listen to their sounds:

2. STRING INSTRUMENTS.

BOW
FINGERS
If we take a look at the violin, the lute, the harp or the guitar, we realize that all of them have STRINGS,  although the way we play them is different. For instance, to play the violin we do it with a BOW, if we play the harp we use our         FINGERS, and if we play the guitar we can also use a PICK. All of them belong to the STRING family.

3. PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS.

The last group is the PERCUSSION family, and there are also three ways to make them sound. We can HIT them as in the case of drums or xylophones, we can SHAKE them in the case of the maracas, and if we play the guiro we need to SCRAPE it.

Although there are many ways to play different instruments, there are only three FAMILIES: WIND, STRINGS and PERCUSSION. Could you classify the following instruments into their families? Try it!

Final Activity:
Create a power point explaining how we classify the musical instruments. You should name at least one instrument of each group and explain why it is in that family and how we play it.
